Abstract

13,342. Giessmann, M. C. J. G. June 6. Cams. - In connexion with screw propellers which have a reciprocating and rotary motion, a sleeve is provided which connects the engine and propeller shafts and has cam-shaped ends contacting with fixed cams to give the reciprocating movement. The propeller shaft b projects into the hollow driving-shaft d, Fig. 1. A pin i in the shaft b passes into a slot h in the shaft d, whereby the latter may rotate the former and allow for relative endlong movement. A sleeve j is also rotated by the shaft d, a bolt k passing through slots l which allow relative endlong movement. The ends m of the sleeve have cam surfaces adapted to contact with fixed cams n so that as the sleeve rotates it is also moved backwards and forward. This latter movement is communicated to the propeller shaft b by the pin i, which projects beyond the shaft d into the sleeve j. In a modification, the sleeve is reciprocated by a pin in the engine shaft engaging a cam groove therein and is rotated by the end cams, whereby the rate of reciprocation is retarded.
