Abstract

137,175. Hall, J. W. March 7, 1919. Valve-gear.-Relates to cam mechanism for converting rotary into reciprocating motion, as in operating the valves of internal-combustion engines, of the kind in which two disks provided with camgrooves are arranged face to face on a shaft, the reciprocating member being provided with rollers to engage the grooves, and the rollers passing from the groove in one disk to the groove in the other disk by reason of inclined surfaces formed at the end of the grooves. According to the invention, the cam-grooves are so arranged that, during one cycle, reciprocations of different amplitudes and of different periods may be obtained, the number of reciprocations being independent of the number of revolutions. In the arrangement shown, cam-disks with grooves, Figs. 5 and 6, are arranged opposite to each other on the shaft and are engaged by a shuttle G carried by the reciprocating member as shown in Fig. 4. With this arrangement as indicated in Fig. 7, one complete reciprocation is obtained during two revolutions of the shaft, although the reciprocating member rises and falls three times. The shuttle is preferably formed as a cylindrical member engaging the end of the reciprocating member and having projecting ends which are thin and flat or slightly curved to engage the cam-grooves and may be retained in the extreme positions by a spring-pressed ball; or the shuttle may be of uniform thickness throughout and provided with filling-pieces to engage the reciprocating member as shown in Fig. 4.
