Abstract

29,560. Miller, H. P. E. Dec. 22. Cam gears.-In valve-gear of the type in which intermittent motion is obtained by a constantly rotating projection, which picks up, drives forward, and releases one or other of two studs, only one position of release is provided and the intermittent motion is transmitted to a cam-shaft or to a part rigidly connected to it. One form of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 2. A shaft rotating at twice the speed of the crankshaft carries a disk B having a projection or striking piece C capable of moving radially and pressed outwardly by centrifugal action. A bowl C<2> on the piece C moves along a camsurface and is shown at the position in which the striking surface C<1> has moved out of engagement with the stud D<2>. The striker rotates freely until it engages and drives the second stud D'. The studs are mounted on a disk D, attached to a part E, Fig. 5, having projecting pieces E<1>. The pieces E<1> drive through springs E<4> projecting parts F on the shaft F' on which are mounted the cams G<1> for operating the valves G<3> which may be poppet valves or reciprocating valves. Spring-pressed brake studs F<2> are provided on the parts F and the arrangement is such that each stud is driven through an angle of 36 degrees while the springs E<4> are being compressed and before communicating motion to the cam-shaft F'. When the stud is released the parts again separate. In a modification, a constantly rotating finger picks up one or other of two bowls having studs moving in a cam slot. The bowls escape at a certain position and the finger rotates freely until it picks up the second bowl.
