engines, and the object of my invention is to produce a simple effective device that will cause the magneto to produce a spark of sufiicient intensity to fire the initial charge in starting when theengine is turned over slowly, and also to automatically retard the timing of the spark so as to avoid back firing, and to automatically advance the spark and throw the spark intensifying apparatus out of service when the engine is propderly started and has acquired sufficient ee In the drawings which form a part hereof and in which similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device in position, parts being broken away. eferrmg now more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a portionof a bracket attached to the engine and upon which magneto 2 is mounted. To armature shaft 3 of magneto 2 is fixed notched bar 3 having notches 3 and 3 formed in the 'endsthereof. To the upper end of driving shaft 4, mounted in-bearin 4, is secured plate 5 having pins 6 and fixed diametrically opposite each other in the upper surface thereof and of sufiicient length to engage notched bar 3.

At 9 is shown the throttle arm of the gov, ernor which is revolubly mounted on pi 9 fixed in the engine casing, and at 9" an 9 are spur gear sectors operating shaft 9 upon which carburetor valve 9 is mounted and which is operated by the rocking motion of the throttle arm 9. Secured to bracket 1 are bearings 10, 11 and 12 having a vertical.
. At 21 is shown a notch formed in the side 7 of shaft 13 just below bearing 11, and in such a position as to engage interrupter 22 when turned toward bracket .1 by lever 16. Interrupter 22 is secured to bracket 1 by bolts 23 and is formed as shown in Fig. 4
with a notch cut therein at 22 to engage I pins 6 and 7 as hereinafter described.
I will now describe in detail the opera tion of my device, the engine being quiet and the various parts of my'device beingin the positions shown in solid lines in the dr wings. Lever 16 is thrown by hand. into the position shown in dotted lines at 20 and held in this position by catch 19 engagingend 18 of pin 17. This operation causes timing arm 14:" to be thrown into the position 14 and allows interrupter 22 to advance to position22F. The engine now being started by hand, the revolving of the armature shaft 3 causes one notchas 3 in bar 3 to catch on notch 22" in interrupter 22. As the armature shaft 3 continues to revolve pins 6 and 7 move away from bar 3 until pin 6 strikes the curved end 22 of interrupter 22 and thus allows spring 8 to revolve the armature shaft at a high rate of speed for a portion of its revolution or un til bar 3 again strikes pins 6 and 7. This adinstment and operation as described produces'F-a spark of the required intensity to fire the initial charges in the cylinder just as the piston passes the dead center of the the direction indicated by the arrow and of course giving pin 17 the same movement. This pivotal movement of throttle arm 9 and pin 17 disengages pin 1'( from catch 19 whereupon spring 16" forces lever 16 back to its normal position, the cam like action of shaft 13 at its notched portion 21 throws interrupter 22 back so as not to engage the notches in bar 3 as itrevolves, and advances the spark to its normal time.
It is understood that while I have herein described and illustrated a device adapted for use with a two cylinder engine, minor changes in construction and operation may be made within the scope of the appended claims, as for instance the device may be adapted for use with a one cylinder engine or an engine with more than two cylinders.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A magneto drive for internal combustion engines, comprising a yieldingly connected driving shaft and armature shaft, one or more stops positioned on said driving shaft, means secured to said armature shaft in such a position as to engage said stops, an adjustable interrupter for said arm, and governor controlled means for adjusting said interrupter.
2. A magneto drive for internal combustion engines, comprising a yieldingly connected driving shaft and armature shaft, one or more stops positioned on said driving shaft, an arm secured to said armature shaft in such a position as to engage said stops, an adjustable interrupter for said arm'mounted independently of said magneto drive and in operative relation thereto, and governor controlled means for ad'- justing said interrupter.
3. A magneto having a timing arm, a
yieldingly connected driving shaft and armature shaft, one or more stops positioned on said drivin shaft, an arm secured to said armature shaft in such a position as to engage said stops, an adjustable interrupter for said arm, and governor controlled, means for simultaneously" adjusting said interrupter and said timing arm.
4. A magneto drive for internal combustion engines, comprising a yieldingly, connected driving shaft and armature shaft, one or more stops positioned on said driving shaft, an arm secured to said armature shaft in sucha position as to engage said stops, an interrupter capable of being thrown into and out of operative engagement with said arm, manually operated means for operindependently of said magneto drive and having a notch formed therein to engage said arm and an outwardly turned end adapted to engage said stops, and governor controlled means adapted to remove said interrupter from engagement with said stops at a predetermined period.
6. A magneto drive for internal combustion engines having an adjustable interrupter mounted independently thereof and in operative relation thereto, a governor operatively connected thereto, a shaft yieldingly mounted adjacent to said magneto drive and adapted to adjust said interrupter, means for locking said shaft to said governor when quiescent and releasing said shaft when in operation.
7. The combination of a magneto having a spark retarding and intensifying device attached thereto and a mechanism for rendering said device operative and inoperative, said device comprising an adjustable interrupter mounted independently of said magneto drive and in operative relation thereto, a shaft yieldingly mounted adjacent thereto having one end eccentrically connected to the timing arm of said magneto and adapted to adjust said interrupter, an arm secured to said shaft and means for attaching said arm to said governor when said governor is quiescent and releasing said arm when in operation. a
8. The combination with a magneto ha ing a spark retarding and intensifying device attached thereto and a governor operatively connected thereto of a member se-- cured in the upper surface of said governor, an interrupter, a yielding ly mounted shaft operating eccentrically'"thereagainst and eccentrically connected to the timing arm of said magneto and having an arm capable of being thrown into and out of engagement with said member.
9. The combination with a magneto, 'a-- spark intensifying device and a governor operatively positioned with relation to each other, of governorcontrolled means for rendering said intensifying device operative while said governor is quiescent" and inoperative when said governor is in operation.
10. The combination with a magneto hav-' .ing a spark timing device attached thereto and a governor operatively positioned with relation thereto, of governor controlled fixed my signature in the presence of two means for holding said spark timing device subscribing witnesses. in a spark reta ding position while said JOHN L\ OSTENBFPG governor is quiescent and advancing said J spark timing device While said governor is in operation.
