To all whom 'it may concern Be it knovvn that I, EnNns'r VVlLLoUonnY IE'rrnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, of Nautilus W orks, Yeovil, in the county of Somerset, England, have invented certain new and useful Improveme'nts in Means for Controlling the Supply of .Liquid Fuel in Internal-Combustion Fn- 'nes, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to variable delivery fuel pumps for internal combustion engines and provides means for adjusting the moment of injection of the fuel when the enine is Working or at rest so as l'o make the 'injection of the fuel earlier or later as ref quired to suit the working conditions of the engine.
Apparatus made in accordance with this invention comprises a rotating shaft, a fuel feeding pump, transmission mechanism for operating said pump from said shaft com prising two eccentrics carried on said shaft one mounted upon the other, said eccentrics being relatively shiftable to move the een ter of the outer eccentric from its position of maximum throw to a position substantially coinciding with the center of the shaft, and by means for shifting the inner eccentric in relation to the shaft when the engine is working or at rest for the purpose glfl adjusting the moment of injection of the Figure 1 is a perspective View showing hand operated means for altering the moment when the fuel is injected.

pump con- 'the plate 8' being free to move on the shaft 9 between two collars 11 and 12 fixed to the shaft 9. 13 is a handwheel on the end ,of the screwed shaft '9. On the flange are` mounted two coarse-threaded screws 14 and 15 which are free to rotate in bearings in the said flangia 2. These screws 14 and 15 engage two t. lreaded holes in the flange 5. Upon the stems of the screws 14 and 15 are mounted cranks 16 and 17 which are tonnected by links 18 and 19 to pins 20 and 21 mounted on casing e. The pins 2O and 21 pass through the slots 3 and 4. on the flan e 2. Ufernatively the flange 5 can be made to slide by mea-ns of a yoke ring and fork mounted on the circumference of the flange according to the well known manner employed in governors, friction clutches, and similar mechanisms.

What I claim and desire to secure by Let- 5 ters Patent is 1. In a variable delivery fuel pump for internal combustion engines, in combination, a rotating shaft, a fuel feeding pump, transmission mechanism for operating said pump from said shaft comprising two eceentrics i carried on said shaft, one mounted upon the other, said eccentrics being relatively shiftable to move the center of the outer eccentric (in an approximately radial line toward the center of the shaft) from its positionA of maximum throw toV a position substantially coinciding with governor controlled by the speed of said shaft for shifting said eccentrics relatively so as to vary the operation of said pump in feeding said fuel, and means for moving the said inner eccentric angularly'on the shaft for adjusting the moment of injection of lthe fuel when the engine is in motion.
2. In a variable delivery u'el pump for internal combustion engines, in combination, a rotating shaft, a fuell feeding pump, transmission mechanism for operating said pump the center of the shaft, a.
from said shaft comprising two eccentrica carried on said shaft, one mounted upon the other, said eccentries being relatively shiftable to move the center of the outer eccentric (in an approximatel radial line toward the center of the shaft from its position of maximum throw to a position substantially coinciding with the center ofthe shaft, a governor controlled by the speed-,of said shaft for shifting said eccentrics relatively so as to vary the operation of said pump in feeding said fuel, a member on said rotatin shaft which is adapted to be rotated with said shaft and to be slid thereon, means for sliding said member when the shaft is either rotating for utilizing said slidmg motion to move the said inner eccentric angularly on the shaft to advance or retard the time of the stroke of the fuel injection pump.
