GOVERNOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BnLoUoH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hun gary, residing at Springfield, 1n the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors, of which the following IS a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in governors particularly adapted for regulating the intake valve of internal combustion engines, and more particularly relates to a governor of the type which employs the centrifugal force of a series of loosely mounted balls.
The object of the invention is to prov de a governor of the type referred to which will be simple in construction, efi'ective 111 operation and also one in which undue friction upon the balls is eliminated.

Referring to t e drawings, a and a represent the parts of a sectional casing, the upper portion a being provided with a screwthreaded neck a upon which is threaded a cap a. The lower section, a, of the easing is provided with a bushing, a, within which is journaled a shaft, 6, which 1s continuously rotated b suitable driving connections (not shown from the engine. The shaft, b, terminates at a. point within the lower section, a, of the casing and has at the upper end thereof an enlarged circular portion, a, which has a series of radially-arranged pockets, 0', within which are located balls, 0.
The upper end of the shaft, b, is bored out and provided with a bushing, b, withln which is journaled the lower end of a stem, d, which is slidably mounted in a sleeve a in the upper casing section, a, formed integrally therewith. The stem, d, has integ ally formed therewith a circular housing inclosing and in contact with the balls 0'. The stem, d, and housing, al are caused to revolve with the shaft, 6, but at the same time are permitted a vertical movement relatively thereto, and for this purpose the shaft, b, is provided with a plate or ring, 6, having a screwthreaded connection therewith, the outer edge of the plate being provided with an upturned flange, e provided with a series of recesses, 6, within which are located balls, 9 which also extend into Specification of Letters Patent.

As the stem moves upwardly it raises one end of a lever, f, connected with the valve controlling mechanism. A spring, g,'which is a coil spring, surrounds a collar, 9 connected with the stem, d, and is confined between the upper side of the cap a and a ring 9 which is supported upon ball bearings g laid on a projecting flange g at the lower end of the collar 9 By this construction the spring, 9, will remain stationary so far as rotary movement is concerned but the stem, d, and its collar, 9 will be permitted to revolve under the pressure of the spring.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 2- 1. In a governor, a rotatable part, a pocketed member directly connected with said rotatable part together with a series of movable devices arranged in said pockets, a second member having an inclined housing inclosing said devices, and a positive connection between said housing member and said rotatable part such as to cause the said member to rotate therewith but permit it to separate from said pocketed member under the action of said movable devices.
2. In a overnor, a rotatable part, a pocketed mem er connected thereto to rotate therewith, a series of movable devices in the pockets of said member, a housing member inclosing said movable devices having an inclined surface, a third member connected with said rotatable part also having a series of balls, said housing member being provided with a series of slots into which said balls project to form a driving connection between said housing member and said rotatable part.

In a governor, a rotatable part, a pocketed member directly connected with said part, a series of movable devices in the pockets of said member, a slidably mounted spring-pressed stem, a housin member connected with said stem incloslng said movable devices and having an inclined surface adjacent thereto, and a positive driving connection between said rotatable part and said h g mem r and t m t au e the ame to-rotate therewith but be allowed a movement relative thereto to permit said housing member to separate from said pocketed member. In a governor, a rotatable part, a stem slidably mounted relative to said part, separable members connected respectively to said stem and rotatable part one of which is provided with an inclined surface, a series of movable devices between said separable members, connections whereby said members revolve with said rotatable part, a nonrotatable spring exerting its influence on said stem, and antifriction bearings between said spring and stem to permit said stem to rotate relatively to said spring.
5. In a governor, a rotatable part, a stem slidable with respect to said part, separable members connected respectively with said rotatable part and stem together with means for rotating said stem and the member connected thereto, a circular projection connected with said stem, antifriction bearings on said projection, a loose ring on said antifricton bearings, and a coil spring exerting its influence on said ring.
