Engines with two or more parallel cylinders with axes perpendicular to main shaft; radialcylinder engines.-Relates to the balancing of internal-combustion and other engines, in which the number of cylinders is a multiple of two or three and in which there are two or more auxiliary cylinders, and consists in a method of balancing with the cranks at equal angles apart, say 90 degrees or 60 degrees, by arranging the cranks in pairs diametrically opposite. Figs. 3 and 4 show an engine with six working cylinders I .... VI, and two pump or other cylinders or reciprocating masses H<1>, H<2>. The inertia forces of the cylinders I .... VI balance one another, and the moments produced by the cylinders I ..... VI are balanced by the moments of the cylinders H<1>, H<2>, which are set at an angle z with the cranks I, VI. The cylinders H<1>, H<2> are preferably placed as far apart as possible in order to increase the arm b of their moment. An engine may be constructed with more than one set of cylinders in different planes, the cylinders in each set being arranged to balance.
