Composite springs; connexions, attachments, and adjustments applicable generally for tensile and compressive springs.-Relates to vehicle shock-absorbers in which the damping action is produced by the relative motion of cam-shaped members and spring-controlled members coacting therewith, and consists in interposing rollers between the coacting surfaces to reduce the friction which opposes the relative motion between the members. In the form described, a bracket 1, Fig. 1, on the frame 3 carries a fixed roller 4 and a roller 5 mounted on a pin, of which the ends pass through slots 6 in the bracket and are mounted in a fork member 7 actuated by a helical spring 10 in compression. Between the rollers slides a cam-member 13 connected to the axle 14 directly or through any suitable linkage, the lower portion of the cam having straight parallel sides, and the upper portion two straight divergent sides. The rollers engage the lower portion of the cam during normal yielding of the suspension, but if the normal limit of the yielding is passed, the cam engages the upper portion and through the movable roller 5 compresses the spring 10 and increases the braking action. The cam-surface may be of any form, and any number of cams, placed between the same, or between different pairs of rollers, may be employed.
