Cleaning c l o t h e s ; carpets, furs, rugs, and the like, beating, brushing, and c l e a n i n g mechanically.-In machines for dry-cleaning fabrics in which the fabric is supported on an endless apron enclosed in a casing provided with a fan for extracting the dust, and is acted on by rotary beaters striking against its surface, the beaters are arranged to vibrate upper and lower endless aprons between which the fabric is supported. The fabric is led over the table 26, beneath the rotary feeding-brush 28, and between the endless travelling aprons 6, 12 of wire cloth or other foraminous material. Within each apron is a rotary beater comprising strips of material 21 such as leather bolted to angle-plates secured to the periphery of a wheel. The beaters are preferably out of line with each other, as shown. Tensioning-devices 23 for the apron are employed. Vacuum pipes 32, 33 within each apron and a slit 30 on the table communicate with a common conduit leading to an exhausting-apparatus. In a modified form, the drums supporting the upper apron are each nearer to the centre of the machine than the drums of the lower apron, and the machine is constructed in two parts, as follows, so as to operate on fabrics of any width. The upper apron and heater are housed in a suspended casing supported on adjustable posts beyond the ends of the machine, while the lower apron, table, and beater are enclosed in a casing directly beneath the upper arm. The fabric is passed into the slit between the adjacent edges of the two casings, which is varied in width by adjusting the upper casing on the posts.
