CLEANING MECHANSSZL To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, RICHARD C. QUAT MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hot Springs, in the Vcounty of Garland and State of Arkansas, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaning Mechanism, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention relates to cleaning apparatus of the vacuum type, and is more particularly intended for brushing and cleaning clothes and similar articles, though not necessarily limited thereto.
An embodiment of the invention that is at present considered the preferable one, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a plan View ofthe cleaning brush. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the guide ring.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the gures of the drawings.
In the embodiment disclosed, a work table 5 is provided, having a fiat top 6, in which preferably near one end is formed a ycircular opening 7. A. box 8 is located below the table and beneath the opening, said box being substantially air-proof and having a metal lining 9. This box forms a vacuum chamber 10. An exhaust pipe 11, communieating with the chamber, leads to any suitable'air-exhausting mechanism, not shown. A vertical shaft l2 extends upwardly through the chamber 10, and may be rotated by any desirable means. The upper end of this shaft carries a horizontal disk 4013, which is disposed below the table top and is provided with a peripheral upstanding fiange 14, closely associated with the edge of the circular opening 7. A guide ring 15, preferably of metal, is secured to the top 6 around said opening and has a depending flange 16 coacting with the flange 14. The disk 13 is foraminous, being provided with ports or small openings 17, and it also has upstanding bristles 18, the upper ends of which are preferably substantially level with the upper surface of the table top 6. These bristles may be alternate sets of wires and hair. Briefly described, the

operation is as follows: The shaft, and consequently the brush, being rotated bv any suitable means and air being exhausted from the chamber 10, if a garment or other similar article is placed upon the table and drawn slowly over the revolving brush, the air passing downwardly Vtheretlniough into the chamber 10, will cause said article to cling to the brush surface, and at the same time will extract the dirt and dust therefrom, this extraction being augmented by the action of the bristles.
From the foregoing, it is thought thatthe construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. ln cleaning apparatus of the character set forth, a work-supporting table having a substantially circular opening, a vacuum chamber beneath said opening, means for creating a partial vacuum in the chamber, a rotatable perforated disk in the opening below the level of the table top, said disk having an upstanding flange, cleaning bristles mounted on the upper face of the disk, and a flanged ring mounted on the table top and overlying the flange of the disk. I
2. In cleansing apparatus of the character set forth, a work-supporting table having a substantially circular opening, a rotatableperforated disk in the opening below the level of the table top, cleaning bristles mounted on the upper face of the disk, and a ring mounted on the table top and overlying the marginal portion of the disk.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
