Reinforced-concrete beams and columns.- Concrete beams are reinforced by means of several layers of steel wires which are retained in place by interlaced cross-wires as shown in Fig. 7. The steel used has the elastic limit near the breaking-point. Concrete columns are reinforced by straight longitudinal steel wires and transverse wires, which, on one face, are interlaced with the main wires, and on adjacent faces pass straight across either inside or outside the main wires, as shown in Fig. 6.
