Gases, treating with electric discharge.-A furnace for producing nitric oxide has a conical wall constricted at the top 5, and air is introduced in a cylindrical stream surrounding the arc, and an outer stream along the wall, by nozzles 4 surrounding and insulated from one electrode 1. The two bodies of air pass through separate water-cooled orifices 7, 8, surrounding the other electrode 2, and may be led away separately or mixed in a chamber 9. The furnace is constructed of bricks, surrounded by a sheet-metal mantle 11, the air in the furnace being under excess pressure of about 100 mm. of mercury. The outer stream of air cools the wall, and helps to compress the inner stream at the top.
