Abstract

Gases, treating with electric discharge.-Currents of air or other gas, issuing from a hollow electrode, form a flat ring in the hottest zone of a similar ring of flame produced by relative movement of the electrodes. As shown, the hollow positive electrode 1 is annular and is closely and finely perforated at a blunt internal edge 2. A rotating shaft 8 carries the negative electrode, consisting of flat arms 13 and curved bars 14, which present edges towards the annular electrode. The arms 13 are set so as to assist in driving the treated gas through a cooling-device 22, placed a little away from the electrodes. The arc chamber is lined with porcelain, silica, or the like, and other parts are treated so as to prevent corrosion by gaseous products.
