Abstract

22,822. Johnson, E. J. S. Oct. 16. Driving-gear.-A device for converting reciprocating into rotary motion and vice versa, applicable in connexion with steam-engines &c., comprises a cross-head b free to turn upon a piston or other reciprocating rod a and having gudgeons c, upon which are mounted rollers d, in combination with an outer cylinder e provided with a wave groove h in which the rollers engage, and an inner cylinder j provided with longitudinal slots k through which the gudgeons pass. The outer cylinder e being fixed, as shown in Fig. 1, reciprocating motion of the rod a produces rotary motion of the inner cylinder j and of the shaft l connected thereto. Conversely, rotary motion of the shaft produces reciprocating motion of the rod. In a modification, the inner cylinder j is fixed, and the outer cylinder e is free to rotate. The wave groove h may be formed in the outer cylinder e or in a liner f attached thereto by studs g, as shown in Fig. 1. A binding-ring m may be provided at the open end of the inner cylinder j. The wave grooves may be cut away at the angles h<1>, as indicated in Fig. 6, to reduce the tendency to dead-centres.
