Abstract

23,980. Naylor, C. H. Nov. 3. Axial-shaft and reciprocating-piston type.-Relates to mechanism for converting the reciprocating motion of the piston of a steam, gas, or oil engine into rotary motion. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the piston a slides on the shaft f, and is caused to rotate by the engagement of rollers d on the cylinder with a continuous wavy groove, such as would be represented by a sine curve, in the periphery of the piston. The rotary motion of the piston is communicated to the shaft by means of straight grooves h engaged by rollers g on the shaft. End motion of the shaft in its bearings k is prevented by collars j. In a modification, shown in Fig. 5, the piston is connected to a drum m outside the cylinder, the drum communicating rotary motion to the pulley q by mechanism similar to that already described. In another modification, the curved grooves are cut in the cylinder and rollers d are carried by the piston. In another modification, the rollers g are carried by the cylinder and engage straight grooves in the piston, inside which is a tube, secured to the piston and provided with a curved groove engaged by rollers on the shaft. In a modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the drum m carries the rollers d, g and works in a hollow shaft, slotted to allow the rollers d to engage a fixed surrounding ring in which the groove c is formed.
