Abstract
1361. Davy, W. J. Jan. 17. Road-vehicle motors; compound engines; valve gear. -The object is to produce a light enclosed compound engine, in which all the parts are easily accessible, for automobiles. Figs. 1 and 2 show vertical sections at rightangles to each other. The high and low pressure cylinders a, b are arranged side by side, with the cylindrical distributing valves c, d be. tween them. The engine is enclosed in a casing composed of the openended portion i, carrying the pistonrod guides hand the brackets l for the crank - shaft bearings, and the two closing - portions m, m, which provide a space between them for the driving sprocket-wheel n. The crank shaft g is in two symmetrical pieces, joined together by a sleeve carrying the valve-actuating eccentrics and the sprocket-wheel. The crank shaft is supported in ball bearings, in which adjustment is effected by rings s screwed into the bearing-bracket, the ball races for the crank shaft being formed in a ring r capable of sliding endwise to a slight extent. The link motion for the valves is made so that at the extreme positions of the reversing-link 4 the active eccentric-rod is in line with the valverod. The details of this construction are given in the Specification. The reversing-lever 10 may be hollow, as shown in Fig. 4, and have at its end a rotatable handle for operating the throttle valve 15 through a shaft 12, pulley 13, and cord 14.
