Abstract
17,246. Penso, J. A., Keller, F., and Trypani, C. G. July 31. Engines with axial shafts and reciprocating pistons. -The gear described gives a more uniform turning moment than is usual with the class of engine wherein driving is effected without the use of cranks. The high-pressure cylinders 1, Fig. 1, receive steam by the pipes 2 and exhaust takes place through the pipes 3 to the low-pressure cylinders 4 which, in turn, exhaust through pipes 5 into the condenser. The piston-rods 7, 8 of the respective cylinders are connected to lugs 11 fixed to rods 10, which form with circular disks 9 a frame constituting the cross-head. To each disk 9 is secured a block 12, the inner face of which has the form of two screw surfaces of opposite hands, each extending over half the periphery of the block. The blocks 12 work loosely over the driving-shaft 13. Between these blocks is a block 15 keyed to the shaft 13, both ends of which are in the form of screw surfaces similar to those on the blocks 12. With this gear, a continuous rotation of the shaft 13 is produced by the reciprocating motion of the pistons. The blocks 12, 15 may run in oil. If the engine is intended to run in one direction only, one screw surface only is required on each block. If the engine is to be reversible, two screw surfaces are formed on each block and reversing-gear of any known type is used.
