Engines with two or more parallel cylinders with axes perpendicular to main shaft.-In locomotive or other steamengines having one or more pairs of cylinders each working at boiler pressure and with cranks at 180 degrees, one cylinder of a pair is arranged in advance of the other in order that their piston slide valves may be mounted on the same spindle, one valve having outside admission and the other inside admission. The valves may be arranged in separate valve-chests, as in Fig. 2, or the two valves may be combined as shown in Fig. 3, L being the inlet space and E the exhaust.
