Abstract

1360. Dawe, C. Jan. 18. Oscillating-cylinder engines; valves, distributing. -The engine described in Specification No. 2889, A.D. 1905, is provided with means for balancing the side pressure on the oscillating sleeve and the reciprocating valve. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 5, balancing ports g, z, i, v are provided opposite the inlet ports f, w and the exhaust ports u, h in the sleeve C. The ports i, h and z, u are connected by grooves n, q. The distributing-valve is attached to the spindle K by a pin H, Fig. 12, and the heads E form right and left handed helices, a groove b being provided for slow working. The steam or air entering at m, Fig. 1, passes up the valve and, through the orifices t. In a modification, the main and balancing ports are connected by passages outside the valve casing. The balancing ports act as additional inlet and outlet ports. The reciprocating valve is provided with two slow-working grooves.
