Abstract

Caissons; sunken ships, raising.-Stranded or sunken vessels are temporarily repaired by means of a tubular casing 3, open at the bottom, supplied with air under pressure, and, if desired, provided with an air-lock. The lower end of the casing is brought in proximity to the leak, and water is dammed off by cement, fabric, &c., or by splaying the foot by means of plates 9, so as to allow access of workmen.
