Abstract

121,315. Young, F. W., and Davis, R. H. Dec. 1, 1917 Leakage, stopping.-To repair vessels damaged below the water-line, a built-up patch provided with one or more inflatable air bags or containers is fitted over the hole. Fig. 2 shows a patch a built up of timber or iron or steel and provided with containers b to which compressed air is supplied from the surface through the pipes c. The patch is hauled into position by the lines a<1>, and the air-bags are then inflated, which causes the patch to be pressed against the hull and held whilst being fixed. When the patch is made of iron or steel, the air-bags may be partly inflated before it is immersed. Curved patches are described applied to the bilge. A diver's stage d. drilling-machine e, &c. may be suspended from the patch.
