Abstract
557,575. Ropes &c. MARKS, H. W. June 18, 1942, No 8347. [Class 109] [Also in Groups XXVIII, XXI and XXXIII] Hose piping which may be used as a tow rope &c., comprises an inner pipe or tube for conveying liquids or gases, surrounded by means rendering it buoyant, to enable the hose to float when used for fuel or water supply, rescue work, military operations, &c., at sea or across rivers, &c. The hose may also be used as an emergency pressure line to and from submarines, to render aircraft more buoyant in emergency landings, &c., as floats for rafts, pontoon bridges, &c., or as ships fenders, life lines, &c. In one form, Fig. 2, the hose comprises inner and outer pipes A, B with an air cavity divided by webs b<1> into air-locked portions. In a modification, Fig. 4, the hose A is surrounded by lengths of rings C' of expanded rubber, cork or other buoyant material. Lengths of such hose may be connected by couplings d<2>, Fig. 7, surrounded by wooden sleeves e and buoys E and having left and right hand threads to facilitate quick assembly. Bending at the joint may be limited by spacing blocks d and ball-ended nozzles d', Fig. 11. The' hose may be stored in tanks capable of being towed at sea by small boats, and may fitted with telephone lines or speaking tubes, and the buoys may be fitted with reflectors or lights. To adapt a buoyant hose for sea-calming, it is fitted with nozzles through which is sprayed upwards a fluid such as a mixture of oil or as non- inflammable fluid and water; the piping may comprise several lines or a network or may be attached to a canvas sheet or sheets.
