Abstract

110,469. Palmer, A. W., and Stephens, W. J. T. Feb. 23, 1917. Submarine vessels.-A life-saving apparatus for submarines comprises a float, for supporting the escaped crew, connected to the vessel by collapsible tubing provided with hatches and air valves and accessible from the vessel, the float being normally held on a housing on the submarine. The float A, of steel plating covered with canvas, has a central hatch b leading to the tube B which is normally contained within the housing D over which the float is held by arms p on spindles p<1> locked by nuts s. A rope ladder g and hatch h are provided in the tube, the folds of which are held by clamps n. A further hatch and sections of rope ladder are provided for attachment as the tube is drawn out. A compression chamber F surrounds the lower end of the tube. Guide lines control the speed at which the float rises. When in use, the various sections of the tube are maintained under varying air pressures according to their depths, spring-loaded valves controlling the pressure. Signalling means are provided between the float and the vessel.
