Abstract

114,412. Browne, R. M., and Scott, T. D. March 26, 1917, [Convention date]. Sunken ships, raising.- Pontoons for raising sunken vessels have a flat side capable of lying snugly against the side of the vessel and a surrounding flange. whereby they may be secured to the vessel. As shown, the pontoon 1 has a flat deck 2 with a surrounding flange 3 receiving bolts 5 for securing the pontoon to the ship 6, the bolts preferably passing through the ribs of the ship. The pontoon is divided by longitudinal bulkheads 7, 8 and may be floated to the sunken ship on its bottom 9. An orifice 10 is then opened to flood a compartment 11 and tilt the pontoon vertically; the compartment 12 is then flooded by water passing through an orifice 13. Guide-ropes passing from a wrecking vessel over pulleys fixed to the side of the sunken ship are employed to position the pontoon, which is then temporarily fixed to the ship by turnbuckles 18. Hose 19 is provided to regulate the pressure in the pontoon while submerging and to admit air to displace the water when the ship 6 is to be raised.
