Abstract

136,155. Electric Boat Co., (Assignees of Spear, L. Y.). Feb. r, 1916, [Convention date]. Submarine vessels; bulkheads. -The various compartments are so arranged that, in the event of accident, any one of the members of the crew may pass from the damaged compartment to the other compartments or to the surface. The vessel is divided by transverse bulkheads into a series of compartments 8 - - 12 between each of which is situated an air lock 13. The air lock is formed partly by the dished bulkheads 26 and partly by the vertical box-girders 27 fitted for structural strength. Doors opening into the larger compartments are fitted, and compressed-air pipes 24 laid throughout the ship enable any water entering an undamaged an lock to be forced out. Each large refuge com partment is provided wich an escape chamber and a releasable buoy, together with a valve apparatus for controlling the supply of compressed air to any other compartment of the vessel to assist in raising it. Escape chambers may also be fitted to the air locks.
