Class 68(2) Apparatus for providing a firm connection below water between a foundation, e.g. the upper end of a foundation pile 1, and the lower surface of an immersed structure 6 to be supported thereon, comprises a bushing 3 which telescopically engages a smooth sleeve 2 mounted around the top of the foundation pile 1, has a packing ring 4 around its lower edge which forms a liquid seal with the sleeve 2 and, around its upper edge, a packing ring 5 for application to and to form a liquid seal with the lower surface of the structure 6. The sleeve 2 and the bushing 3 may be applied to the pile before driving in, in which case suitable' shock absorbing blocks are mounted on the pile to prevent deformation of the bushing; alternatively the sleeve and bushing may be applied after driving, having sheet piling or a steel tube, lowered around it and the water being drained off so that the sleeve and the bushing can be fitted. The sheet piling, or steel tube, is subsequently removed. The structure 6 has a vertical passage 8 which can be extended upwards above the surface of the water; and a pipe 9, which can be used for inspection purposes, or for introducing casting material into the space inside the bushing 3 After the structure has been positioned and lowered over the pile 1, the bushing 3 is raised by tackle which is lowered through the passage 8 and is hooked on to a metal grid 7 carried by the upper end of the bushing 3. Water is then pumped from the interior of the bushing 3 so that casting materials can be introduced through the pipe 9.
