Abstract

9937. Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, et Cie. May 2, 1910, [Convention date]. Free-piston pumps.-In a gas-explosion pump of the Humphrey type, a free piston is interposed between the combustion chamber and the liquid column, this piston being fitted with an air buffer device. In Fig. 1, the piston d moves in the cylinder a, which is an extension of the combustion chamber. The piston has a collar f working in the larger cylinder i, so that the enclosed air above and below the collar acts as a buffer. In a modification, the buffer arrangement is outside the pump, in a separate cylinder, the piston being connected to the working piston by a rod. When the charge is ignited above the piston d, the piston is forced downwards, and its motion then arrested by the buffer. The water continues to move, thus drawing in water through the valve l. This suction is increased by a small upward movement of the piston caused by expansion of the air in the buffer. The water now forces the piston back, expelling the exhaust gas. The suction and compression strokes, caused by the elasticity of the air in the buffer, are shorter than the working stroke. A differential piston may be used between the gas and the liquid column.
