Abstract
9642. Bernhardt, P. April 20. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Couplings, automatic.- Railway vehicles with screwcouplings are arranged to be both coupled and tightened automatically. The couplings, comprising links 2, 3, and screw mechanism 1 are supported in the ' set ' position by levers 7, 9 rule-jointed at 8. They are raised by a transverse shaft 12 and retained by a cam 16, which abuts on a similar cam on an extension of the lever 17. On the impact of the vehicles, the lever 17 engages with a corresponding lever 18 and releases the couplings, which then fall into the hook 6. Draw - gear tensioning agents. - The screwed shaft 1 is turned by a toothed pinion 27 engaged by a similar pinion on a similar shaft 25, having the pitch of the screw-threads appropriate to the gear-ratio between the pinions. The shaft 25 is turned by a flexible shaft 24 which is connected, through releasing - gear 23 to a coiled spring 21. The spring is set from the side of the vehicle by a shaft 19 having a ratchet mechanism 30 and bevel-gear. The releasing-gear is shown more particularly in Fig. 3. The shaft 22 bears a recessed member 23 engaged by a lever 29 of which the second arm is connected by links 32 to an eye on an extension of the rod 7. Hence, when the rod 7 drops with the coupling-links, the lever 29 releases the rod 22 which turns under the influence of the spring 21 and tightens the coupling. In releasing the tightening-gear before uncoupling, the ratchet 30 is first disengaged.
