DEVICE FOR REPAIRING CAB-COUPLINGS.

To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Device for Repairing Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel link and lug attachment by means of which a broken car coupling may be readily repaired, or a coupling reinforced in emergency to hold the knuckle in place when the lugs of the coupling break, so as to be practically as strong as before broken, and thus save the delay that would be caused it the car with the broken coupler had to be disconnected and set out of the train. It is also an object of my invention to provide a device for this purpose which will involve the minimum expense, and which may readily be applied.
I attain the objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan of my invention applied to a broken car coupling member; Fig. 2 is a side view of same; and Fig. 3 is a detail of link 5.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in all the views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide coupling 1, having a lug 8 cast integral therewith. Lug 8 is provided with a tongue 9 extending toward the shank of the coupling member. I provide a novel repair link 5 having a slotted portion 6 of suitable shape and adapted to engage over lug 8, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, when an emergency repair is required. Link 5 is further provided with slotted portion 7 shaped to conform with the shape of pin 3, which is inserted through slotted portion 7 of link 5. ber has been illustrated having the knuckle 2 and the coupling lugs 4 rendered inefl'ective by reason of the break that is indicated by broken lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The usefulness of the coupling is restored by means of my invention, link 5 having its slotted portion 6 engaged over lug 8 (Where it is retained by tongue 9 of the lug), and having its slotted portion 7 engaged by pin 3, as illustrated. It should be noted that the coupling 1 is provided with like lugs 8 both on its top and its bottom portion, and that like links 5 connect the lugs 8 and pin 3, to hold the knuckle in place when a break has occurred between the knuckle and coupling lugs 4.. It will be apparent that the device is readily applied by engaging the slotted portions of the links over the tongued lugs and by securing pin 3 in engagement with the other end of the links, s shown.
What I claim is:
1. A device for repairing car couplings, comprising a coupling member having opposite lugs cast integral therewith, a pivot pin, and links connecting the lugs with opposite ends of the pin, whereby to bridge and secure the broken portion of the coupling.
2. A device for repairing car couplings, comprising a coupling member having opposite lugs cast integral therewith, the aforesaid lugs having tongues projecting toward the shank of the coupling, a coupling pin, and links having slotted portions adapted for engagement with the aforesaid lugsand opposite ends of the pin, whereby to bridge the broken portion of the coupling and retain the links in engagement with the lugs by means of the projecting tongues, substantially as set forth.
