Abstract

Sphygmographs and the like.-Tension of the eye-ball is measured by means of a spring-pressed plunger a carrying a curved and detachable end d to press against the eye. The plunger moves in a cylinder b passing adjustably through the handle f, and on the end of this cylinder is mounted a quadrant q slotted as shown, over which passes a pointer n carrying a needle u at its upper end and pivotally connected to the spindle m of a piston k pressing against the inner end of the spring c. In operation, the head d is placed against the closed eye, and the pointer turned, till the piston k, as shown by fiduciary marks v, w, just tends to overcome the eye-tension and compress the spring. By then turning the quadrant, which is sufficiently flexibly mounted, against the pointer, the needle u is caused to perforate a graduated paper scale in the frame s on the quadrant.
