Abstract

1824. Francis, d'A. J. Jan. 24. [Cognate Application, 4381/11.] Metallic spring bodies and cores; tyre attachments to rims. -Helical springs e, Fig. 1, enclosed in a flexible cover, are seated on crosspieces c carried by the sides of the cover. The pieces may be riveted or otherwise secured to the cover, and in the form shown they consist of cups with downwardly-inclined tongues h, Figs. 3 and 5, which engage apertures i in metal rings l and in an ordinary fabric and rubber cover. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the cover lining a is of flexible metal and the rings l are dispensed with. The outer ends of the springs are seated around cups d, Fig. 6, which are formed with lugs riveted directly to the cover a, Fig. 2, or through the fabric cover, Fig. 3, to metal washer-plates k. In order to remove a spring, the tyre is removed from the rim, and the spindle 1, Fig. 11, of a tool inserted through the cup c. Projections 10 engage parts 11 on the cup d and a sliding sleeve 6, bearing against the cup c is moved so as to compress the spring and move the cup out of the cover by turning the base 4 which screws on the spindle. To secure the tyre to the rim at one or both sides of the metal rim n a channel p is formed. A sectional ring q seated in the channel is secured, as shown in Fig. 2, by transverse bolts x passing through the. channel, ring, and felloe, or by bolts u, Figs. 1 and 3, passing across the tyre, and through plates t which fit into cut-out parts s of the outer wall of the channel and are hooked to engage under the inner wall. These plates lie flush on the outside.
