Abstract

Cam-actuated pumps; stroke, varying.-In an internal - combustion engine the liquid - fuel pump is worked by a reciprocating cam adjustable in the direction of movement in order to vary the moment of admission of fuel. In the arrangement shown, the pump plunger l is worked by a cam n on a rod i, which is reciprocated by an eccentric g, and the adjustment is made by a hand-wheel r, which moves a pin on the eccentric-rod h in an inclined slot p in the end of the rod i. In one modification the eccentric-rod is connected to a bell-crank lever which works the cam-rod, and the fulcrum of the bell-crank lever is carried on an adjustable screwed rod. In another modification, the eccentric-rod is connected with the camrod by a screw-and-nut device, so that, by turning one member of the coupling, the distance between the eccentric rod and cam-rod is altered. If desired, only the cams n and not the rods i may be adjustable. The cam-rod may have differently situated cam-surfaces on opposite sides of it, and may be turned through 180 degrees to bring either surface into action, as well as being adjustable longitudinally. The stroke may be adjusted by means of a governor-controlled rod e carrying a wedge v which engages a projection t on the plunger l so as to hold the plunger at a greater or less distance from the rod i. The wedge v may also be adjusted by hand.
