Pneumatic and composite springs; connexions and attachments applicable generally for tensile and compressive springs.-Relates to the construction of piston-and-cylinder air cushions placed between inner and outer rims in a wheel for vehicles, and consists in fixing the cylinders d to flats on the bonding-band b in a groove in which is a tube k connecting the cylinders so that they can be inflated from one valve. A screwed tubular plug n forms the junction with the tube. Screwed on the plug so as to clamp down the cylinder is a hollow stem p integral with a diaphragm o, on which is secured a cup-leather s. Between the leather and the cylinder slides a bell e with a chair f carrying a roller g running on the interior of the outer rim. In order to maintain the air pressure automatically, one cylinder 6 is fitted with two sliding bells, both provided with non-return valves 10, 11. The outer bell 8 is caused to move outwards so as to introduce air between the bells by interposing a helical spring, or by attaching the bell to the rim by means of a projection 25 on the chair and a groove in a circumferential rib 13. The lower parts of the cylinder contain oil, which is said to assist outward movement of the bell 8. The action of the air cushion may be assisted by enclosed helical springs.
