Air tubes and chambers.-In pneumatic tyres of the kind in which the inner tube is connected by a pipe with an annular relief chamber, the chamber is composed of two relatively movable sections yieldingly held against expanding movement. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the inner tube 7 is connected by a pipe 6 with a chamber or reservoir 5, which may be mounted on the hub 1. The reservoir comprises an annular elastic tube 51 inflated through a nipple 28 and held in compression by an annular plunger 20 acted upon by springs 21. An elongated washer 12 is fitted so as to slide in a groove 35 beneath a slot 34 in an outer casing 13 to allow for the movement of the union 9 as the reservoir expands or collapses. The plunger 20 is connected by links &c. 36 to an outer cap 15 so as to keep the springs in position when the cap and plunger are removed. Openings 37 are provided in the casing 13 to admit air behind the plunger 20. The nipple 28 is fitted with a ball valve 29 held by a spring 31. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the reservoir is mounted between flanges 41, 43 on a fixed ring 38 and a movable ring 42 respectively, springs 45 being mounted between a part 47 of the flange 43 and the heads of bolts 46. The attachment flange 52 of the ring 38 may be made with a small central opening which may be bored out to fit any size of hub.
