Abstract

694,839. Inflating pneumatic tyres. AER CONTROL. Nov. 13, 1951, No. 26573/51. Class 144 (ii). In an arrangement for inflating pneumatic tyres of a vehicle in motion, the air is conducted to the tyre through an air-tight rotary joint comprising a fixed housing B resiliently mounted on the vehicle and having an air inlet nipple T at one end, and a hollow body A rotatably mounted in the housing B and having a hub D projecting from the other end B <SP>2</SP> of the housing to be secured by means of a plate P, coaxially with the wheel, the hub D having a through bore U connecting with a nippled cap H for connection with the tyre inflation valve, and the hollow body A having holes O in its walls to connect the interior thereof with an annular oil-containing chamber L in the housing B. As shown, the end B<SP>2</SP> of the housing provides a bearing for the hub D of the hollow body A and is urged axially against a shoulder S of the body A by a spring M which bears at one end against an annular wall A' within the body A and at the other end against a ball N rotatably seated in a depression in a housing end-cap C. The end cap C carries the nipple T and is removably bolted to the housing B. A tube K projects into the hollow body A to form a continuation of hub bore U and to support the spring M. To ensure lubrication of the bearing surfaces of hub D and housing wall B <SP>2</SP>, one at least of the holes O in the rotary body A is provided with a rivet R which projects into the oil chamber L to act as a thrower. This maintains an oil-film around the bearing surfaces which prevents leakage of pressure air. Gaskets G, G<SP>1</SP> prevent air leakage from the endcap connections C and H respectively. Specification 659,582 is referred to.
