Abstract

805,705. Hydraulic and friction type shock absorbers. ETABLISSEMENTS REPUSSEAU & CIE S.A., DES. March 14, 1956, No. 8037/56. Class 108(3) In a tubular shock absorber of the kind comprising an outer tubular emember 7, an inner relatively movable member 6 and a surrounding protecting tube 5, open at one end and connected at the other end to the member 6, a conduit 13 is connected to an external source of fluid pressure and communicates with the interior of the tube 5. The invention is applicable to both hydraulic and friction-type shock absorbers. As shown in Fig. 1, the member 6 is a piston rod and carries a head 4 formed with an eye 1 which serves as a housing for a rubber bush type joint 3 forming a connection to a sprung vehicle part. The housing 1 is formed with an annular crosssection cavity 17 connected by the conduit 13 to a source of compressed air. The cavity 17 is also connected by ports 18 and venturi nozzles 19 with the interior of the tube 5. The outer surface of the member 7 is formed with heat-dissipating ribs 20. Air is thus caused to pass 'from a reservoir or pump on the vehicle via the conduit 13 and cavity 17, to the interior of the tube 5, and over the outer surface and ribs 20 of the member 7 to the lower end of the tube 5. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the ports 18 lead directly to external tubular connections coupled to the source of compressed air. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the rubber bush joint 3 is pivotally mounted on a pin 2a rigid with lugs 26, 26, carried by a ring-shaped member 27. A rubber ring 33 forming a seal with the outer surface of the tube 5, is gripped between the member 27 and a ring-shaped member 29 rigid with the sprung part of the vehicle. A rubber domeshaped member 31 is held by a band 30a in sealing relation with the periphery of the member 27, and is connected at 32 with a source of compressed air. The latter passes from the member 31 through ports 35, 35, into the interior of the tube 5. The air supply may pulsate.
