Abstract

19,537. BarriÞre, P. Aug. 20. Two-stroke-cycle engines; crank chambers; cylinders, construction of.-In a radial-cylinder cross-connected engine having cylinders of two diameters, scavenging-air and explosive mixture are admitted separately to the pump chambers through controlled passages in opposite ends of a stationary crank-shaft. In the engine shown in Fig. 1, each pump charges the following cylinder. Admission of air and explosive mixture through ports j and separate pipes, one on each side of the engine, is controlled by the rotation of the supply pipes past orifices in the ends of the hollow crank-shaft. To facilitate scavenging, the air supplies to the pump chambers are admitted after the explosive mixture. The cylinders are provided with annular projections m, which engage sleeve-like extensions x on crank chambers, formed in halves and held together by bolts b<2>. The engine is suitable for aeronautics and also for road-vehicle and ship propulsion.
