Packing, metallic; packing, removable casings, containers, or carriers for. - The packing for piston-rods, plungers &c. comprises split metal rings 6, which contract against the rod or plunger or preferably metal lining-rings 8 thereon, and rings 7 which expand outwards against the stuffing-box 3, the two sets of rings being preferably separated by packing, such as flat rings 9. The rings 6, 7 are rings of uniform cross-section which have been hammered or rolled to decrease their rigidity in both directions from a point opposite the division.
