Abstract

24,902. Brocklehurst, R. Oct. 29. Planes, arrangement and construction of; framework. -The planes of an aerial machine are of bat's-wing form and are so connected that the whole of them may be folded up. When arranged as a biplane, the planes are built up of portions carried between cross-pieces 3, 4, 5. From the cross-pieces 5, curved rods 7, 8 radiate in a wing-like manner. One or more booms 14 are connected to the members 4, 7, and booms 13 are secured to the members 4. The central pieces 3 may be replaced by a single cross-piece. Inclined planes 12 are secured between the upper rods 4 and similar lower rods. The lower rods are connected together by means of parts 10, the pentagon thus formed being stiffened by means of cross-struts. The lower plane is connected to the upper one by struts 17, 18 and stay-wires 19, 20, though in place of the wire 19 a wire may be fixed to the upper and lower bars 5. Lower booms 14 are fitted. The planes are suitably curved and stiffened. In the case of a monoplane, the lower planes are omitted, the wires 20 being secured to the croas-pieees 4. A pentagonal tail may be used. The propelling-mechanism &c. are placed between the panels 12.
