Abstract

Aerial machines with aerostats; aerostats; balancing.-The car D, Fig. 11, is suspended by extensible cords L from the extremities of horizontal outriggers B, B<1> extending at right-angles through the centre of the balloons A, so that, when the machine tilts, the higher side is caused to bear a greater proportion of the weight of the car; this unequal distribution of the weight tends to restore equilibrium. The outriggers are formed of wire netting in the form of a tube, which is strengthened by wires threaded through the meshes. Vertical posts Q are also provided, and the ends of the outriggers and the posts are stayed or braced together. The fabric of the aerostat A, Fig. 1, is connected at F to the outriggers, a plug being inserted in the hollow outrigger to prevent escape of gas. A number of aerostats may be connected together by a framework, which is preferably of a geometrical form so that additional aerostats, may be connected to the frame. The extensible part of the suspension cords L consists of a tube J, Fig. 4, filled with indiarubber cuttings and provided with a plunger K. Propellers may also be provided at the front and rear and the sides of the machine, and are put into action, when required, for balancing the machine.
