Retorts. - Apparatus for producing gas from peat, which has been crushed and saturated with petroleum, comprises a retort 1 having an air-inlet pipe 6 and a gas-outlet pipe 4 leading to a water-cooled chamber 8 containing tar or other carburetting - medinm; the gasoutlet pipe 15 from the carburetting-chamber is formed with a number of curved portions 17, 18 having branch pipes 19, 20 for removing the by-products. The retort shown is rotatable and and has an outlet pipe meeting the stationary pipe 4 in the gland 3.
