Abstract

6302. Loomis, B., and Pettibone, H. March 15. Gas-producers.-Producer gas is manufactured from wood in a cupola-shaped producer. Two producers A, B are connected at the top by a flue C and to a tubular boiler E by gas-outlet pipes D, D<1> which are provided with valves. In operation, coal K is supplied to fires on the grates of the producers and coked by down-draughts of air which pass through lids x, and the resulting gas is drawn off by an exhauster which is connected to the boiler. Wood fires I are formed on the top of the coke, and the combustion products passing downwards are decomposed into hydrogen, carburetted hydrogen, and carbon monoxide. Air may be admitted into the base of one of the producers, the outlet of which is closed, and passed up through the distilling wood, forming a mixture of producer gas and aqueous vapours. This mixture passes through the flues C, down the other producer, the lid of which may be partly open, and thence through the boiler to a holder. Vacuum gauges may be placed on the outlet pipes of the producers to indicate the pressure &c. To prevent charcoal and ashes from clogging the coke, steam is blown into the generators to drive the fine charcoal and ash out of the coke and cause them to form an accumulation T at the sides. For this purpose, the steam is admitted to each producer alternately through valves l, m, and the outlet pipe of that producer is closed ; the watergas formed may be drawn off through a pipe G to a separate holder. Instead of steam, a counterblast of air, carbonic acid, or combustion products may be used.
