20,014. Lake, W. E., [International Gas Development Co.]. Sept. 23. Gas manufacture, processes for.-A mixture of coal-gas and water-gas is produced by passing water-gas through powdered coal falling freely through a distilling-chamber. The mixed gases may be enriched by adding oil or oil-gas. The apparatus described comprises a vertical retort A opening at its lower end into an horizontal retort B. Steam, preferably superheated, is passed into the horizontal retort and powdered coal is allowed to fall from the hopper E<1> through the vertical retort. The steam in contact with the hot coke forms water gas, and the powdered coal gives up its richer gases in the vertical retort and its poorer gases after it has fallen on the coke bed. Preferably only from 5 to 20 per cent of the carbon is removed from the coke.
