lie it known that I, DAVID A. SHORT, a citizen of the United States, residi at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State o Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Processes oiMaking Gas, of which the following is a specification.
M y invention rclates to a process of making gas and utilizing th e heat products thereof, the object of this in ventioh boing to utilize the heat of the gases produced by a producer gas apparatus to distil coal in retorts, to
make ordinary distilledrgas and to then utilize the coke from said e torts in the producer gas apparatus.
A further lobject of the invention is the process oi means for utilizing the heat products iror'n the producer gas apparatus to generate steam. f
A further object of the invention is theproduction of a ixed'gas consisting oi a mixture of producer gas and distilled gas and the utilization of all the heat producing powers oi the fuel from which said gas is obtained.
Further objects and advantages of the invention Will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows. f

Numerous other mechanical devices might be substituted for those herein shown and de cribed, the invention residing in thc novel process hereinafter sci forth.

The operation of the device is as follows: .The very hot producer gas passes through the casing 7 and around the retorts 8 distilling the coal contained in said retort!! and producing distilled 'gas v`from said retorts. This distilled gas passes through the pipes 16 to the mixer, or if it be desired to use this distilled gas, -it may be taken' ofi through the branch pipe 22, After the producer gas has passed through thc casing pipe 20 and through the generator 10 where its heat is there utilized to gencratesteam in the usual and Well known manner. If it be desired to utilize thc producer gas without mixing it with thc distilled gas, this' producer gas rnay gas, tbc rom-.lining coke is removed from thc retorts through thc doors 9 and conveyed in any dcsire'd n1an nor to tho producer gas generator 5, whcrc every particlil oi uns is extracted from it and `whore the heat from said coke isstill further utilized in distilling more coal in tho rolorts. "lhe tar conveyed to thc producer gas ziplmratos, is also utilized in the production of producer gas. Il.l will therefore be seen that cvcry particle of heat producing power contained within the fuel delivered to this apparatus, is utilized. Ordinarily, producer gas is passed through a cooling device before being delivered to the mix'cr.` The heat units lost in cool ing this gas, represent a direct waste and by virtue of saved.
