Abstract

18,696. Consolidated Brake & Engineering Co., and Luard, E. S. Aug. 13. Compensating for wear by double-ratchet mechanism which cannot be tampered with. In mechanism for taking up the wear of the brake shoes of railway and like vehicles, of the kind described in Specification 16,097/07, in which the pull-rod or push-rod is provided with ratchet teeth on opposite sides engaged by a power pawl and a detent, a second power pawl is added, so arranged with respect to the detent that the mechanism cannot be tampered with. In the form shown, the pull-rod or push-rod a is slotted at a<1> and has ratchet teeth b, c engaged by the weighted power pawls d, e carried by the bridle-piece f. The bridle f is pivoted at g to the lever h connected to the pull-rod j and is maintained in position by a cross piece f<1>. The detent i is pivoted to the lever h, and has a tail i<1> so shaped that, when the detent is raised, the pawl e is depressed into engagement with the teeth b, and, when the pawl e is raised, a projection e' on its upper face depresses the pawl i. When the swing of the lever h exceeds a predetermined amount, the detent i slips over a tooth and shortens the effective length of the rod a.
