Abstract

648. Cowie, J. Jan. 10. Brakes.-A railway-wagon brake is arranged so that it can be actuated either by hand or by the rotation of one of the axles, the same movement which applies the brakes by hand also putting into gear the axle-actuated mechanism. The ordinary brake shaft q is connected by an arm q<1>, a spring coupling r, and links p, p<1> to the Opposite ends of a slotted lever f pivoted at d to the underframe of the wagon. In the slot of the lever f is mounted a sliding block g which can be raised and lowered by means of an arm i on the shaft of a hand-lever k. The block g, when lowered, comes into the way of a wiper b fixed to the axle, which is thus caused to apply the brakes. The brakes are held on by a pawl m engaging a ratchet sector l formed with two sets of teeth adapted for the two directions of motion of the wagon. The pawl is disengaged by an arm o, to release the brakes, when the handlever k is lifted. A notched bar u<2> is pressed against a pin u on the lever k by a spring u<3> to hold it in any position in which it may be placed. The lever k, when depressed, also acts on the brake shaft q through a stud k<2>, a spring lever t<2>, a link t<1>, and an arm t.
