Splitting.-A device for splitting wood to form firewood is constructed with an inclined support with a stop against which the wood is held by a pressing-device during the cutting, the support being connected to pivoted arms arranged so as to be suspended against a vertical support when not in use. The wood 18 is placed on an inclined support 8, and against a stop. The support 8 is held in operative position by means of pivoted arms 6, and also by pins 12 on an angle-piece 10, which rest in holes in an angle-piece 14 attached to a bracket 1. During the cutting by means of a knife fixed to a pivoted holder 4, the wood is held by a serrated presser 15 provided with a handle 16 and with a stop 19, against which the knife acts on its return to remove the presser after each cutting-operation. The support 8 can be removed from its bearings and be suspended by the arms 6, when the apparatus is inoperative.
