Patented Mar. 14, 1933 UNETED STATES PATENT fol-*F1os mnnnrrfr rixLnY, jor cLAcKAMAs COUNTY, OREGON GUIDE ron ,SAW 'BL-Anus 1N woon sAwING Application led .Tune 1 6,- 1982. Serial No. 615,481.
My invention relates to Vthe art ofcross cut sawing generally in the cutting of logs or sticks of wood into "desired lengths, and it consists mainlyin a woodsmans implement for guiding and for supporting a saw in its operative reciprocatorycutting motion across a log, for instance.
By the aid of my device the weightof a m saw is mechanically vsupported and the saw operated, it may be, by one person only, and
ment at present preferred.
Figure I is a side elevation of my implement fixed as in use on alogandsupporting below the log a saw in the undercutting operation.
Figure II is a side elevation of my imple- G ment detached, showing in full lines the saw supporting armthereof adjusted on one side of its supporting post and showing in dotted lines the said arm adjusted in Vreversed position on the post.
Figure III is a side elevation of my implement having e its movable parts folded together as for transportation. l Referring to the numerals on the drawing, 1 indicates a supporting post, which is pref- U' erably of skeletonl shape, constructed of two parallel sidestrips 2 of metal, for instance wrought iron, whichare unified by a series of cross-overs 3, that are spaced apart at s suitable frequent intervals and which are preferably wrought into integral union with the strips 2 to complete the post.
The outer faces of each of the strips 2 are substantially smooth save for the provision upon each of them of Va graduated series of transverse grooves 4.
` thereon.
` My implement'in its entirety 4of conveniently portable weight, so that an opera-- tor mayeasily 7carry Iit about with him in the woods or wherever the stock to 'be `cut is.
located. v e
"The post' 1` isprovided at' one r'end .with` a preferably integralrcross-head 5 which ter-V minates at one end in a longitudinally tapered blade that is preferably, in effect,- a point of afspatula-shape as illustrated,Y
and which at the other end is provided with a driving head 7 lwhich enablesfan operator,
against torsional strain, and anchorsl'the implement in the fixed position requiredV for use. Y
Upon the post 1 is provided a thereunto snug fitting, sliding, preferably rectangular metallic lcol-lar 8 that is adapted at will toibe slipped by` manipulation from Vend toendef the post 1, or to anyintermediatev position The vcollar 8 is'made of heavier metal on' one yside to provide support'9` for a sawsupporting :spring yarm 10. The said .arm is preferably provided next the post rv1 with a foot l1 and is pivotally 'secured to the support 9 'at its upper side as by a pin bolt 12.V Aheel 13 oul the foot 9V affords positive means for supporting the arm 10 inthe horizontal position when the foiot '11'is at- 'vas'by impact upon it of a hammer, tofdrive the vblade Sfforfuse longitudinally into ia log,
for instance, Vwith cleavage effect Yat any point of disposition thereinhe mayisfe'lect.. The flat shape kof the blade 6 'holds itr in use tached to the `support 9, and the collar 8 fixed to the post. f
.To the bottom ofthe support 4r9 on the*V collar 8'is fixed, as by tap bolts 14, strong spring support 15 having Va sharp freeedge 16 that is adapted to engage any yone ofthe y grooves 4'and to support the foot -11 and Y thearm 10 thereon in any one of a series of adjustments determined by thev one'A of 5 the series of grooves 4 that may be selected for interengagement with-'the sharp edge of.
the support 15.
The free endjof the arm 1'0 is provided with a oo-aXial bearing pin '17 upon which` is pivotally secured a vguide drum 18whose periphery is provided with an annular groove or series of grooves 19 in one of which the back of a savv 20 runs. The resiliency of the arm 10, aided by that of the spring support 15, serves to press the saw, Working in one oi" the grooves 19, With operative cutting etect, against .the stock which it is designed to cut.
Upon the end of the post l, opposite that end which carries the head 5, is provided aV reduced end 21 vthatnonstitutes a coaxial* extension of the post and aordsmeans for turning the collar 8 When itis slipped' uponY the end 21 of the post, as it may be at will. The end 21 is preferably cylindrical in shape and carries'a nut 22 that is threaded to the outer extremity of the reduced Vend 2l, and which serves to prevent accidental separation of collar 8 from the post. v
A set screw 23, operable as by a handle 24, is preferably provided for securelyV lixing, `by itsfimpingement against veither of the strips 2` the collar 8 in any position in relation to the groove 4 for engagement with `which the edge 16 of the support 15 may be adjusted.
` The operationy of my device will, it is believed, be understood by one skilled in the ther description.
iv What I claim is:
' 1'. Aj saw guide which consists of the combination With a supporting post and art, in view of the foregoing, Without furmeans for. anchoring it atone end to the stock to be out, of a collar adjustable upon the post, a resilient 'arm pivotally ysecured to the collar, and means for effecting graduated adjustment'of the collar on the post.
2. Ina drag saw guide the combination with a post and a sliding collar thereon, of a resilient arm pivotally carried on the collar. a spring supporton thecollar having a sharp edge'adapted to engage any one ot a series of transverse grooves'provided on the post.
3. In a drag sawguide the combination with a post and a sliding collar thereon, of a resilient arm pivotally carried on the col- A lar, a spring support on the collarhaving a sharp edge adapted to engage any one of a.-r seriesv of transverseA grooves provided on the post, and means for securely iixing the collar to the post in any position to which the collar maybe adjuste 4. In a drag saw guide the combination with a post and a'sliding collar thereon, of a resilient arm pivotally carried on thecollar, a spring support onthecollar having a sharp edge adapted to engage anyone ofj-a series of transverse grooves provided Von the post, means for securely iiXing the collar to the post in any position to Which the collar may be adjusted, and a crosshead on lthe post adapted to be driven into a log for anchoring theV post thereto.
With a transversel vrooved ost means for anchoring it to a log, and a sliding collar on ythe post, of a resilient arm, a foot therefor pivoted tothe collar, a heel on the post constituting a positive supportv for the arm, a spring having an edge adapted to engage the individual grooves of the post for the purposeof adjustment, and means for tixing the collar on the post inV any position to which it maybe adjusted thereon.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.`
