An apparatus for cutting plates or foils by a tool such as a circular saw comprises a central, self-supporting stand formed as a closed body or consisting of a head 2, base 1, posts 5, column 3 and guide rail 3<SP>1</SP>, a saw head 17 transversible up and down the column and guide rail and a removable framework 6; 9, 12 for carrying removable boards 7 that support the work in a position slightly inclined from the vertical. The work is shiftable along rollers 14 on a rail 13 and the boards are shiftable on rollers 15 on the posts 5 and 6. The saw 20 is pivotable in its head 17 so its blade 22 lies horizontally or vertically and a riving knife 25<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3b, carries a transparent hood 26<SP>1</SP> which may be fixed to the knife or be pivoted to it under spring-loading and carry a roller or rollers 28 bearing on the work. A bearing plate 31 may be provided on the saw head and one or more presser bars 33, Fig. 5, having resilient inserts 35 may be hooked over the boards 7 at 36 and engaged by a pin 37 in a spring 38 which can be depressed by the operator's foot to release the bars. The saw head is traversed by an endless cable 50 driven from a handwheel 42 on a column 41 which can be lowered out of the way after release by a pedal-operated spring arm 47. A tensioning device 53, Fig. 8, connects the cable to a bracket 52 adjustable on the saw head and comprises a piston 54 and spring 56 within a cylinder 53<SP>1</SP>. To prevent the saw head dropping if the cable breaks, a clamp 57 fitted between a spring 59 and a washer 60 can pivot round a bolt 61 and clamp the head to the column 3. A counterweight or spring is provided on the cable to return the saw head automatically to its starting position and carries an eye which will wedge on a safety cable if the cable 50 breaks. A similar safety device may be provided for the saw head and the saw head and counterweight may be connected by a safety cable running over a pulley arranged above the two parts.
