Filaments, supports for; filaments.-Me t a l f i l aments have their limbs inclined to the axis of the lamp by short or long intermediate rigid supports b, as described in Specification 15,017/07, but the filament bends are now held by resilient supports d instead of by rigid supports. The strength of the resilient supports d may be sufficient merely to strain the adjacent parts of the filaments, without overcoming the friction at the intermediate supports b, so that the slack in the remainder of the limbs compensates for the gradual contraction of the filaments with use ; or the supports d may be stronger, and exert a small or large pull on the parts of the limbs near the supply wires. The resilient supports may consist of metal, carbon, quartz, &c. ; they may be hooked or looped elastic wires, or each may be in several parts, or they may contain flexible joints. One or more supports may be placed at each filament bend. Several filament ends may be attached to one supply wire at the same or different points.
